Project Description:

This project is aimed on creating 30-meter spatial resolution forest cover and change products for the entire global land surface from 2000 to 2010.  Our work will be part of the USGS Global Land Cover Initiative, which has the mandate to develop global land cover products in an operational setting.  The proposed activity will enable the development of the first prototype products in support of the GLCI.  Eventually, an operational capability will reside in the USGS National Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) that will consist of time-series depictions of percent cover for woody vegetation, trees, bare ground, permanent snow and ice, herbaceous vegetation, mosses and lichens, and water.  Five-year land cover classifications will also be generated. The first results of the project have  been published in Hansen, M.C., et al. "High-resolution global maps of 21st-century forest cover change." Science 342 (6160) (2013): 850-853.
